A Note from the Author As I put the finishing touches on my forthcoming calculus text, I wanted to share my work with other instructors in a way that would help them quickly assess their interest in the book. Because of the many compliments that reviewers have bestowed on the book’s problem sets, there seemed no better way to give colleagues a true sense of my text than to offer a sampler of these problems. This booklet contains 50 problems from the single-variable chapters. To select these problems, we asked a dozen instructors from across the country to choose the problems they found most interesting and would be likely to use in a lecture or assign to their students. We analyzed their responses and chose a representative sample of their favorite problems to include in this booklet. Both traditional exercises and technology-based exercises are included here. It’s important to note that the problems included here are those that my reviewers found interesting, innovative, fresh, or particularly relevant to today’s students. A calculus text must also include more standard problems that are carefully graded by level of difficulty, and my book includes many such problems as well. I hope you’ll take a few moments to look through these sample problems. Please feel free to use them in your homework, quizzes, or exams. Use the address below to send me your feedback, questions, or requests for class-test copies (W.H. Freeman will be happy to provide as many copies as you need). I look forward to hearing from you. Praise for Rogawski’s Problem Sets “Some of the best exercises I have seen….The careful
attention to the selection of the exercises tells me that Rogawski has spent a
lot of time and effort thinking carefully about the best way to emphasize the
points in his text through directed, focused problem sets.”
“The homework sets are delightful. The ‘Preliminary Questions’ and ‘Further
Insights and Challenges’ are excellent for inducing deeper thoughts than just
performing calculations.”
“I like the exercises very much; there is a large number of
them; the level of difficultly varies very nicely from easy and routine to
challenging and hard. Rogawski’s choice
of exercises is very good, and I would be very happy to have these exercise
sets to choose from in my lectures: I am impressed!”
“The exercises are right on target. There seems to be enough, and the degree of
difficultly increases at a nice rate through the exercises. I particularly like the Further Insights and
Challenges after each section.”
“Jon Rogawski really does a nice job creating exercises that
walk the students through the critical thinking, thus allowing folks like me to
assign more difficult (and interesting) exercises.”
“I like this book.
Good explanations and lots of good problems.”
