Welcome to Astronomy Online by Tim Slater, University of Arizona
Astronomy Online is a unique hypermedia product that weaves engaging multimedia visualizations
into a structured learning environment that reflects what we now know about how people learn. The goal was
to create a conceptual survey of introductory astronomy by dividing complex concepts into cognitively
appetizing bite-size pieces. Each cognitive piece is clearly summarized with hyperlinks explaining all
terms as well as illustrated using high-resolution images, insightful animations, and video presentations
that can be accessed by any computer connected to the Internet.
Astronomy Online provides hyperlinks to in depth information, comprehensive figure captions, and
interactive exercises that provide multiple approaches to explaining complex concepts. Consistent with
how people learn, each instructional module begins by asking the learners to answer questions about the
concept under study to make their knowledge explicit. At the conclusion of each module, students are
prompted to reconsider their initial answers and provide scientifically accurate explanations. In total,
Astronomy Online is a comprehensive online learning environment that is consistent with how people learn.
