
By special arrangement with Sienna Software, the Universe 5.0 CD-ROM accompanying each copy of Universe, Fifth Edition, features a special student version of the acclaimed Starry Nighttm virtual planetarium software. Using Starry Night, you can view the skies from any place on Earth between 4713 B.C. and A.D. 9990. You can observe and learn about the planets and their satellites, comets, galaxies, nebulas, and more than 14,000 stars.
Starry Nighttm Deluxe is an enhanced version of Starry Night that lets you go anywhere in the solar system, features over 19,000 stars, adds the ability to create your own customized planets, and has many additional options.
Starry Night Deluxe is available as an upgrade to users of the student version for a special price of $59.95. To upgrade, just call or contact Sienna Software through their web site and ask for the "W. H. Freeman upgrade."
The LiveSky Starry Night Manual that comes with Starry Night Freeman Edition is a useful guide to the program, but it is based on the Starry Night Deluxe Edition. The Starry Night Freeman Tutorial was written especially for the special student edition of Starry Night.
To install Starry Night, locate and launch the SNSETUP.EXE file at the root level of the Universe 5.0 CD-ROM. Follow the on-screen instructions.
The SNSETUP.EXE program will create a program group called Starry Night Freeman on your Start Menu. This menu will provide access to the following components:

Windows Users: To access the Starry Night program, click the Start button, move the mouse pointer over Programs and then Starry Night Freeman; click Starry Night Freeman Edition 2.1.
You can create a desktop shortcut to launch Starry Night. Do exactly as described above, but instead of clicking Starry Night Freeman Edition 2.1 with your left mouse button, click it with the right mouse button and hold the button down. Drag the file to your Windows desktop. Release the button and select Create Shortcut Here from the pop-up menu.
Macintosh Users: Double-click the Starry Night icon.
The first time you open Starry Night, you'll be prompted to set your home location:

A list of location categories will be displayed with a triangle next to each one. To show locations within a category, click the triangle beside the category's name. For example, to view the sky as it appears from Chicago, click the triangle beside North America to show a list of countries in North America. Click the triangle beside United States to show cities in the United States, then select Chicago, IL. Notice that the red circle indicating your viewing location is now over Chicago on the world map. When you're done, click the Set Home Location button.
