1. Amniote egg (p. 412)   A group of Late Carboniferous gymnosperms that often reached 30 meters in height and formed large woodlands resembling modern pine forests.
2. Cordaites (p. 409)   Spore plants characterized by branches that radiate from discrete nodes along the vertical stem and by horizontal underground stems that bear roots.
3. Conifers (p. 409)   Plants whose seeds are lodged in exposed positions on cones or on other reproductive organs.
4. Cyclothems (p. 426)   A group of large foraminifera that lived on Paleozoic shallow seafloors.

8. Gymnosperms (p. 409)   An extinct group of animals that occupied an intermediate evolutionary position between reptiles and mammals.
9. Pelycosaurs (p. 413)   Plants whose seeds are exposed on cones rather than covered like the seeds of flowering plants.
10. Sphenopsids (p. 408)   Fin-backed reptiles and their relatives; ancestors of therapsids.
11. Therapsids (p. 413)   Warm-blooded; having a body temperature that is internally regulated.
