1. Abyssal plain   The condition in which two species vie for an environmental resource, such as food or space, that is in limited supply.
2. Albedo   The study of the distribution and abundance of organisms on a broad geographic scale.
3. Barrier island   An animal that feeds on other animals or animal-like organisms; a consumer that feeds on other consumers.
4. Benthos (benthic)   A gently sloping region along the base of the continental slope.
5. Biogeography   The broad expanse of seafloor lying between about 3 and 6 kilometers below sea level.
6. Biota   Water whose salinity is lower than that of normal seawater and higher than that of fresh water.
7. Brackish   An elongate island composed of sand heaped up by ocean waves that lies approximately parallel to the shoreline.
8. Carnivore   The circular flow of water around Antarctica resulting from the juncture of the west-wind drifts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.
9. Circumpolar current   The percentage of solar radiation reflected from Earth's surface.
10. Competition   The tendency of a current of air or water flowing over Earth's surface to bend to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.
11. Continental rise   An extension of a continental landmass beneath the sea.
12. Continental shelf   The continental slope and abyssal plain.
13. Continental slope   The flora and fauna of an ecosystem.
14. Coriolis effect   The bottom-dwelling life of an ocean or freshwater environment.
15. Deep-sea floor   The sloping submarine portion of a continent, extending from the continental margin to the continental rise or abyssal plain.
