BioPortal featuring Prep-U (
yourBioPortal.com)

New One-Site Access
All new books include BioPortal featuring Prep-U and the Interactive eBook. BioPortal features a wide variety of study and review resources designed to help students master the full range of material presented in the introductory biology course. The site is tightly integrated with the printed textbook via in-text references to all the activities and tutorials.

Student Media Resources included in BioPortal:

Prep-U
Prep-U is a powerful quizzing engine that bridges the gap for students between what they know and what they don’t know. Prep-U focuses study time exactly where it should be, with personalized, adaptive quizzes that move students toward a better grasp of the material—and better grades.

Interactive eBook
The Life, Ninth Edition eBook is a complete online version of the textbook that fully integrates all the student media resources.

New Interactive Tutorials
This new set of interactive tutorial modules help students master key complex topics through hands-on activities that let them learn through doing. Each tutorial includes a self-assessment quiz on the topic covered, which can be assigned in BioPortal. With these tutorials, students:
  • Solve problem scenarios by applying concepts introduced in the textbook.
  • Work with experimental techniques in order to learn underlying principles.
  • Explore model systems to discover how biological mechanisms work.
New BioNavigator
This unique new visual resource is an innovative way to access the wide variety of Life media resources. Starting from the whole Earth view, students can zoom in to any level of biological inquiry, encountering links to a wealth of animations, activities, and tutorials on the full range of topics along the way.
  • Students can navigate through the different areas of biology, gaining an appreciation of the ways in which they relate to each other.
  • Instructors can begin lectures by navigating down to the topic being covered, providing a visually compelling introduction as well as reinforcing the connections between biological systems at different levels.
Updated & Revised Animated Tutorials
The Ninth Edition’s vivid animations offer thoroughly updated, revised depictions of over one hundred topics. Animated tutorials present complex topics in a clear, easy-to-follow format that combines a detailed animation with an introduction, conclusion, and quiz. These tutorials are specifically prepared for Life, with the same graphic design and specific references to the text. New for the Ninth Edition:
  • More realistic, shaded art that maintains impeccable clarity
  • A larger frame size for clearer viewing and better projection during lectures
  • The option of viewing text narration along with audio narration
  • The option of assigning Animation Quizzes in BioPortal
Working with Data Exercises
Built around some of the original articles depicted in the experiment figures in the textbook, these exercises ask students to look at the real data produced by the experiment in question and then asks them to answer questions based on those data. These exercises help build quantitative skills and encourage student interest in how scientists work.

Interactive Summaries combine a review of important concepts with links to all the key figures from the chapter as well as all of the relevant tutorials and activities.

Activities. Over 120 interactive activities help the student learn important facts and concepts in a variety of ways, such as labeling steps in processes or parts of structures, building diagrams, and identifying different types of organisms.

Flashcards. For each chapter of the book, there is a set of Flashcards that allows the student to review all the key terminology from the chapter. The student can review the terms in the study mode, and then quiz themselves on a list of terms.

Experiment Links. Each experiment featured in the textbook has a corresponding treatment on the companion website. Links include to further information about the experiment, further research that followed, and applications derived from the research.

Interactive Tree of Life lets you explore a wide range of information about all the major groups of organisms and their relationships to each other.

Interactive Quizzes. Every question includes an image taken from a textbook figure, thorough feedback on both right and wrong answer choices, references to textbook pages, and direct links to eBook pages for immediate reinforcement of concepts.

Personalized Study Plans help students focus their study time on the areas that need it most, and link them to helpful media resources and eBook sections.

Key Terms. The key terminology introduced in each chapter is listed, with definitions and audio pronunciations from the Glossary.

Suggested Readings. For each chapter of the book, a list of suggested readings is provided as a resource for further study.

Glossary. The language of biology is often difficult for students taking introductory biology, so we have created a full glossary with audio pronunciations.

Math for Life (Dany Adams, The Forsyth Institute) Math for Life is a collection of mathematical shortcuts and references to help students with the quantitative skills they need in the laboratory.

Survival Skills (Jerry Waldvogel, Clemson University) Survival Skills is a guide to more effective study habits. Topics include time management, note taking, effective highlighting, and exam preparation.
