PreLectures
PreLectures are animated, narrated, and visual explanations of key concepts in the chapter. Each PreLecture activity is about 15 minutes long, broken into 2-minute segments. A student views conceptual animations, equations, worked examples, and text while listening to a guided explanation, checking for understanding along the way. At the end of each PreLecture, students respond to multiple-choice and free-response questions that gauge comprehension of the material. Results provide important feedback that an instructor can use to tailor an upcoming lecture.
Textbook
Complementing and underpinning the entire system is the smartPhysics textbook. Featuring a focused narrative that emphasizes key concepts, the smartPhysics textbook was carefully developed in tandem with the multimedia components, making it entirely consistent with the approach, coverage, and effectiveness of smartPhysics.
Lecture
Using information gathered from student activity during the PreLecture, instructors can design their lecture periods to be both efficient and effective. Taking advantage of a better-prepared student audience, instructors can spend time on concepts needing further explanation, or they can build on knowledge students acquired during the PreLecture. smartPhysics easily handles clicker integration, adding an element of peer instruction to the lecture period.
