New Relevant Examples and Exercises
About one quarter of the exercises and examples in the first edition have been updated or changed. Examples include:
• Chapter 4, Exercise 4.38 Managing Diabetes
• Chapter 8, Example 8.5 Acupuncture for Migraines
• Chapter 13, Example 13.7 Who Gets the Flu?
• Chapter 22, Exercise 22.1 Age and HPV Infection
New Large Data Set ExercisesAt the end of quantitative chapters you will now find a series of exercises dealing with large data sets. These data sets contain several variables and a fairly large number of subjects. Some of these data sets recur throughout the book, providing an opportunity for comprehensive analysis spanning a range of statistical topics. No short solution is provided for these exercises, giving instructors the option to assign them as graded assignments or in-class work (when a computer lab is available).
Thoroughly Updated to Support the Interests of the Course
Most notably:
o Chapter 18: the discussion of the degrees of freedom for the two-sample t procedures has been simplified to account for technology use in the classroom
o Chapter 23: now includes the section on residuals and residual plots, placing a detailed examination of residuals in the context of checking inference conditions
o New! Chapter 28: covering Multiple and Logistic Regression
Technology Outputs in Additional Formats
In addition to TI83-84, Excel, Minitab, and SPSS, a number of examples in this edition are illustrated using JMP and R. In addition, all CrunchIt! outputs have been updated to reflect W.H. Freeman's new CrunchIt! 2.0 version, rebuilt as a menu-driven interface over the R program.
