NEW Applications to Motivate Students
In addition to incorporating the latest developments throughout, the Sixth Edition features updated Chemical Highlights boxes on new applications of organic chemistry in the life sciences, industrial practices, and environmental monitoring and clean-up. Relating often concepts to the concrete activity of practicing scientists encourages students to succeed and demonstrates the impact they may have in their careers.

 

Improved Problem-Solving Approaches
• In this edition we have revised all of the in-chapter exercises, called Working with the Concepts. Each exercise now begins with a Strategy section that emphasizes the reasoning students need to apply in attacking problems. The Solution arranges the steps logically and carefully, modeling good problem-solving skills.
• NEW. Try it Yourself Exercises. Each in-chapter worked exercise is paired with a Try it Yourself problem that follows up on the concept being taught.
• NEW. Caution statements appear in many of the exercises, alerting students to potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. The exercises chosen for solution are typical homework or test questions, enabling students to acquire a feel for solving complex problems,rather than artificially simplified ones.
• NEW."WHIP” strategy. We teach students how to recognize the fundamental types of questions they are likely to encounter, and explain the solution strategy in full detail. The "WHIP" strategy encourages students to ask the following questions: WHAT does the problem ask? HOW to begin? INFORMATION needed? PROCEED logically; do not skip steps! Solutions of several problem types illustrate the strategy.

Five types of problems provide instructors with flexibility and students with a wealth of varied experience. The problem sets have always been cited by professors as a hallmark of the text, and the standard problems are augmented by the following types:

• Team Problems emphasize collaboration among students
• Pre-professional Problems offer the format typical of the MCAT, DAT, and GRE
• Challenge Problems, labeled for easy assignment, more difficult, integrating concepts and encouraging students to go well beyond memorization.
