New Co-AuthorThe IGA author team is pleased to welcome, John Doebley (University of Wisconsin – Madison) to the team. He maintains the tradition of stellar researcher/educator authorship that has made this book so well-loved. He is a highly reputable population geneticist. He was elected into National Academy of Sciences in 2003 and served as the President of the American Genetics Association in 2005. He teaches the genetics course with Sean Carroll at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. He brings a fresh, student-driven perspective to completely new chapters on the Population and Quantitative Genetics (Chapters 18 and 19) in 10e.New ContentGenetics is constantly changing and we’ve made the following changes to best convey the practice of genetics today.New sections on functional RNA’s have been added to Chapter 8 (RNA: Transcription and Processing), and Ch. 12 (Eukaryotic Gene Regulation) and Chapter 15 (The Dynamic Genome). The Genomics Chapter (Ch. 14) has been thoroughly revised to include new sections on: pyrosequencing, next-generation whole genome sequencing, the personalized genome, and Comparative Genomics: Phylogenetic Inference and Comparative Genomics of Humans. The Evolution of Genes and Traits Chapter (Ch. 20) has been heavily revised by Sean Carroll to reflect recent advances in understanding how adaptations evolve. New examples include the classic case of sickle cell anemia and malarial resistance, multistep evolutionary pathways (illustrated by bacteriophage adapting to new host) and losing characters through adaptive changes in regulatory sequences (illustrated by loss of pelvis fish). The Techniques chapter has been moved up and is earlier in the book (9e Ch. 20; 10e Ch. 10) and presents updates on modern methods used for solving genetics problems, including (1) using PCR in the construction of recombinant DNA molecules and clones and (2) finding genes through fine-mapping. GeneticsPortalGeneticsPortal includes the fully interactive e-Book as well as our new Problem-Solving Engine. This self-grading tool contains most of the end-of-chapter questions from the text, converted into multiple-choice problems, including figures from the text and drop-down menus to engage students.
