New Chapter on Epigenetics (Ch. 21)
The new chapter integrates updates and expands on material formerly spread across chapters in the previous edition. Briefer discussions of epigenetics are now in those separate chapters (5, 11, 17, 22, and 23).
New and Reorganized Text Content
Chapter 11 now covers chromosome structure and organelle DNA (formerly covered in Chapter 21). Chapters 8 and 9 (Bacterial and Viral Genetic Systems, and Chromosome Structure in the previous edition) have been switched so that chromosome variation now follows Chapter 7 (Linkage, Recombination, and Gene Mapping).
Updated Coverage of Molecular Genetic Techniques and Genomics
Chapter 19, Molecular Genetic Analysis, includes coverage of new techniques that are gaining wider use. The Genomics and Proteomics chapter (20) has also been extensively revised and updated.
Revised End-of-Chapter Pedagogy—Updated by the Author
Unlike many other textbooks Ben Pierce writes the exercises and Worked Problems for his text. The new format for the Worked Problems makes them more helpful and visible, presenting a Solution Strategy, Solution Steps, and Hints for each one.
More Connections to Media Resources
Media icons in the book direct students to online resources in LaunchPad that help them become better problem-solvers (problem-solving videos, online worked problems, self-graded versions of end-of-chapter problems) visualize genetics (animations, interactive activities), and understand concepts (annotated scientific papers from Nature with assessment, LearningCurve).
