New Content, Examples, and Exercises
As always, David Moore has updated the text page by page, with new examples, hundreds of new exercises, and current data. The data come from published reports and represents a broad range of fields to appeal to the variety of majors and students. Many of the new examples and exercises come from contemporary topics, including:
- Monitoring manatee populations – a previous example updated with new data (Chapter 4)
- Collaboration among chimpanzees (Chapter 8)
- Obesity and daily activity (Chapter 18)
- Cocaine traces in Spanish banknotes (Chapter 19)
- Living arrangements for college-age young adults (Chapter 22)
- Cell-only users versus those who retain a landline phone (Chapter 22)
Additional content updates have also been made to appeal to today’s trends and research. (see table of contents on the next page)
Basic Practice of Statistics, Fifth Edition also features:
- 4-Step Process--Used selectively throughout in both examples and exercises, Moore’s [not new to this edition] 4-Step Process (state, plan, solve, conclude) helps students organize statistical problems.
- Caution Notes--Found in the exposition section of every chapter, these notes warn students of possible pitfalls they can encounter when analyzing data. They are denoted by a special icon in the margin.
- "Apply Your Knowledge" Exercises-- Found between sections, these exercises let students apply a concept immediately after reading about it.
- "Check Your Skills" Exercises—At the end of each chapter, these straightforward multiple choice questions review technical skills, as a warm up for the more challenging end-of-chapter exercises. Answers found in the back of the text.
- Chapter Review Exercises-- Moore’s highly acclaimed exercises engage students with real data in real settings.
- Part Review Exercises—Chapters 7, 16, and 21 act as a cumulative review, and are loaded with review exercises.
