George P. McCabe

George P. McCabe is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Science and a Professor of Statistics at Purdue University. In 1966, he received a B.S. degree in mathematics from Providence College, and in 1970 a Ph.D. in mathematical statistics from Columbia University.  His entire professional career has been spent at Purdue with sabbaticals at Princeton, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Melbourne (Australia); the University of Berne (Switzerland); the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Boulder, Colorado); and the National University of Ireland in Galway. Professor McCabe is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Statistical Association; he was 1998 Chair of its section on Statistical Consulting. From 2008 to 2010, he served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Nutrition Standards for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.  He has served on the editorial boards of several statistics journals, has consulted with many major corporations, and has testified as an expert witness on the use of statistics.
 
Professor McCabe’s research has focused on applications of statistics.  Much of his recent work has been on problems of nutrition, including nutrient requirements, calcium metabolism, and bone health. He is author or coauthor of more than 160 publications in many different journals.

David Moore

David S. Moore is Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics, Emeritus, at Purdue University and was 1998 president of the American Statistical Association. He received his A.B. from Princeton and his Ph.D. from Cornell, both in mathematics. He has written many research papers in statistical theory and served on the editorial boards of several major journals. Professor Moore is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. He has served as program director for statistics and probability at the National Science Foundation.  In recent years, Professor Moore has devoted his attention to the teaching of statistics. He was the content developer for the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting college-level telecourse Against All Odds: Inside Statistics and for the series of video modules Statistics: Decisions through Data, intended to aid the teaching of statistics in schools. He is the author of influential articles on statistics education and of several leading texts. Professor Moore has served as president of the International Association for Statistical Education and has received the Mathematical Association of America’s national award for distinguished college or university teaching of mathematics.

Thomas L. Moore

Thomas Moore earned a B.A. from Carleton College, an M.S. from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth.  He has been on the faculty at Grinnell College since 1980 and has concentrated his scholarship on statistics education.  He chaired the Statistics Education Section of ASA in 1995 and the MAA's SIGMAA for Statistics Education in 2004.  He is a Fellow of American Statistical Association and was the2008 Mu Sigma Rho Statistical Education Award winner.

Susan Nolan

Susan Nolan turned to psychology after suffering a career-ending accident on her second workday as a bicycle messenger. A native of Boston, she graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Northwestern University. Her research involves experimental investigations of the role of gender in the interpersonal consequences of depression and studies of gender and mentoring in science and technology, funded in part by the National Science Foundation. Susan is the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as an Associate Professor of Psychology, at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. She has served as a statistical consultant to researchers at several universities, medical schools, corporations, and nongovernmental organizations. Recently, she advised Bosnian high school students conducting public opinion research.  Susan's academic schedule allows her to pursue one travel adventure per year, a tradition that she relishes. In recent years she rode her bicycle across the U.S. (despite her earlier crash), swapped apartments to live in Montreal, and explored the Adriatic coast in an intermittently roadworthy 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco. She wrote much of this book while spending a sabbatical year in rural Bosnia-Herzegovina, where her husband, Ivan Bojanic, worked as an advisor to regional governments. Susan and Ivan fell in love with Bosnia – a beautiful country – and bought a small house in the city of Banja Luka as a base for future adventures. They currently reside in New York City, where Susan roots feverishly, if quietly, for the Red Sox.

William I. Notz

William I. Notz is Professor of Statistics at the Ohio State University.  He received his B.S. in physics from the Johns Hopkins University and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University.  His first academic job was as an assistant professor in the Department of Statistics at Purdue University.  While there, he taught the introductory concepts course with Professor Moore and as a result of this experience he developed an interest in statistical education.  Professor Notz is a co-author of EESEE (the Electronic Encyclopedia of Statistical Examples and Exercises) and co-author of Statistics: Concepts and Controversies.
 
Professor Notz’s research interests have focused on experimental design and computer experiments.  He is the author of several research papers and of a book on the design and analysis of computer experiments.  He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association.  He has served as the editor of the journal Technometrics and as editor of the Journal of Statistics Education.  He has served as the Director of the Statistical Consulting Service, as acting chair of the Department of Statistics for a year, and as an Associate Dean in the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the Ohio State University.  He is a winner of the Ohio State University’s Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award.

F. James Rohlf

F. James Rohlf has taught a graduate-level course on Biometry at the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Kansas, and at Stony Brook University in addition to courses on multivariate statistics and geometric morphometrics. He has also taught many short courses and intensive workshops on statistical topics at many institutions around the world.  He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Kansas in 1962.  Dr. Rohlf’ research has focused on the development and interpretation of multivariate methods in biology – especially for geometric morphometric applications in ecological and evolutionary studies. His original research has been published journals such as Systematic Biology, Evolution, Journal of Human Evolution, Journal of Classification, and the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. He is a statistical reviewer for a large number of journals as well as for granting agencies in several countries. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Presently, Dr. Rohlf is a John S. Toll Professor at Stony Brook University and a member of the New York Consortium in Evolutionary Primatology.

Allan J. Rossman

Allan J. Rossman is Professor of Statistics at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo and previously taught in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Dickinson College. His Ph.D. is in Statistics, from Carnegie Mellon University. He is co-author with Beth Chance of the Workshop Statistics series and Investigating Statistical Concepts, Applications, and Methods, both of which adopt an active learning approach to learning introductory statistics. He was Program Chair for the 2007 Joint Statistical Meetings and President of the International Association for Statistical Education from 2007–2009. He serves as Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement program in Statistics. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and was one of the recipients of the Mathematical Association of America’s Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics in 2010.

Robert R. Sokal

Robert R. Sokal has taught biometry and related courses for almost half a century at the University of Kansas, at Stony Brook, and abroad. In both his teaching and research, he has promoted the use of statistics in biology.  A native of Vienna, Austria, he went to high school and college in Shanghai, China, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology at St. John’s University.  Graduate studies in zoology at the University of Chicago led to a Ph.D. in 1952. He spent 18 years as a faculty member in Entomology at the University of Kansas, joining the then new department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook in 1968. His research has ranged over a diverse group of topics: quantitative methods in systematics (numerical taxonomy), ecological genetics of laboratory populations, spatial analysis of distributions of organisms and their genes, and in recent years, statistical approaches to problems in physical anthropology.  Including translated volumes, he has published 15 books, and over 200 articles.  Dr. Sokal was elected President of four international scientific societies and an honorary member of several others. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also awarded the Charles Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award in Physical Anthropology. Currently, he is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University.

Josh Tabor

Josh has enjoyed teaching general and AP statistics to high school students for more than 15 years, most recently at his alma mater, Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson Arizona. In recognition of his outstanding work as an educator, Josh was named one of the five finalists for Arizona Teacher of the Year in 2011. He is a past member of the AP Statistics Development Committee (2005-2009) and an experienced Table Leader and Question Leader at the AP Statistics Reading and leads many one-week AP Summer Institutes and one-day College Board workshops around the country. Josh is the author of the Annotated Teachers Edition and Teacher’s Resource Binder for The Practice of Statistics 4/e (BFW Publishing, 2012).

In addition to teaching and writing textbooks, Josh has co-authored a number of articles including "Statistics in the High School Mathematics Curriculum: Building Sound Reasoning Under Uncertain Conditions" with Richard Scheaffer (Mathematics Teacher, August 2008) and has been a columnist and member of the editorial board of STATS Magazine.

Jeffrey A. Witmer

Jeff Witmer is Professor of Mathematics at Oberlin College.  He earned a doctorate in statistics from the University of Minnesota in 1983. His scholarly work has been primarily in the areas of Bayesian decision theory and statistics education.  He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and served as editor of STATS magazine.  Among the books he has written or co-authored are Activity Based Statistics and Statistics for the Life Sciences.
